Interview: 5 minutes with...Susie Amy
Yesterday’s first day of filming Not Waving in Southend-on-sea went swimmingly (yes, I did just make a seaside related pun!) and today we are completing the principle photography and so I complete my series of interviews with the incredible cast who are giving their time and talents to making this film for The Curious Room.
Susie Amy, Actress in Not Waving
Last week when we were in Swansea I interviewed the lovely, funny and beautiful actress Susie Amy who is joining the cast of Not Waving. I, of course, know Susie from any number of her roles on TV and I’ve followed her beauty blog (Blusher & Blogging) for quite some time but having been on tour together (in Ray Cooney’s Out of Order) for the last 6 months, we’ve become firm friends. I’m so excited to work with Susie in a different context and after a little glimpse of her work yesterday, on day one of filming, I can’t wait for today to get started!
Kate Sawyer: To start off could you introduce yourself and tell us what you’ll be playing in Not Waving?
Susie Amy: I am Susie Amy. I’m playing Shelley, a Sunbather in Not Waving. I believe a helpful one!
KS: Can you describe our surroundings?
SA: On a sofa in Dressing Room '1' of Grand Theatre Swansea after a performance of Out of Order.
KS: Not Waving is set, partially, in the sea. Are you a good swimmer?
SA: I can swim and it was my favourite thing to do as a child. As I have got older I tend to swim more on hot holidays rather than at home. I tend not to do it for exercise as I don't love the chlorine that pools have - I have bad sinuses!
Raphael Bar, James Holmes, Jules Brown & Susie on location for Not Waving yesterday.
KS: So, sinuses aside you are happy in water. Have you ever nearly drowned?
SA: Yes, in Greece in a pool when I was little. A large child accidentally trapped me underneath them. I was terrified.
KS: I’m not surprised! Amazing you can remember it though isn’t it! Let’s move onto something happier! When did you last go to the seaside?
SA: Yesterday! Langland Bay in Wales - absolutely gorgeous!
KS: Yes, gorgeous South Wales. Do you have a favourite beach in the UK?
SA: Watergate Bay in Cornwall.
KS: Do you have a favourite memory of a British Beach?
SA: I did a series called Echo Beach down near Newquay in Cornwall and had the most amazing summer - work days and days off all involved the beach - and Cornwall beaches are my very favourite in the UK.
KS: Not Waving gets its title from a Stevie Smith Poem. Do you have a favourite poem?
SA: The Highway Man by Alfred Noyes.
KS: AMAZING! The Curious Room commissioned a play version of that poem! We took it to the Edinburgh festival in 2008. I played Bess!
SA: How funny!
KS: Okay- time for a quick fire round…ready?
SA: YES!
KS: Ice cream or Cockles?
SA: Ice cream
KS: Kiss me quick or Sex on the beach?
SA: Sex on the beach.
KS: Waving or Drowning?
SA: Waving.
KS: Sunbathe or swim in the sea?
SA: Sunbathe- with SPF!
KS: Of course! Sun safety first! What are you most looking forward to about your role in making Not Waving?
SA: Hanging out with my friends in the fabulous cast and crew for two days (on a beach!) and being directed by you!
KS: Haha!
